Introduction for digital acquisition:

The digital acquisition of radiological images advantageously replaces the chemical processing by eliminating many of the burden of that later method. No or limited handling, no chemical product, no dark room.

However, a digital acquisition system must be adapted to your existing X ray equipment and your imaging activity. We herebelow suggest a small summary of thoughts and a list of definitions to help you to select an appropriate system.

There are two families of digital acquisition systems :

  • DR systems (Direct Radiography) : their technology is based upon a flat pannel made of a mosaic of amorphous silicium captors and a scintillator. The digital captor is integrated inside the radiological table and its softwares acquire and process the images that are viewed and stored on a dedicated computer. There are no longer cassette manipulations.

  • CR digital acquisition systems (Computed Radiography) : their technology consists of exposing the radiographic latent image on a radio sensitive foil made of phosphorus; this foil is located inside a cassette and is later 'read' by a scanner that digitises the image and sends it to a dedicated computer. The latent image is then erased so that the foil is ready for the next X ray image.
